Effect of Parent-Child Relationship on the Children’s Attitude towards Drugs and Alcohol

Children form their habits from their father and mother. The relationship of children with their parents influences almost their entire life. The present study aims to study the effect of parent-child relationship on the children’s attitude towards drugs and alcohol. The objective of the present research work was to examine the relationship of children’s attitude towards drugs and alcohol with five aspects i.e. protection, indifference, symbolic reward, loving and object reward of parent-child relationship. The researcher has employed survey method under descriptive research. Attitude towards drugs and alcohol is the dependent variable and parent-child relationship is the independent variable of this study. Multistage random sampling method was used to select 200 children from district Dehradun. Collected data has been analyzed using pearson coefficient of correlation. The findings revealed a significant negative correlation between protection dimension of parent-child relationship and children’s attitude towards drugs and alcohol. It has been found that the children who face highly indifference of their mother are likely to have low attitude towards drugs and alcohol. It was observed that the children who are given more symbolic rewards by their mother are likely to have low attitude towards drugs and alcohol. A significant negative correlation has been found between loving dimension of parent-child relationship and children’s attitude towards drugs and alcohol. A significant negative correlation has been found between object reward dimension of parent-child relationship and children’s attitude towards drugs and alcohol. It has been found that the children who are given more object rewards by their mother are likely to have low attitude towards drugs and alcohol.
