Abstract

Background: Pregnancy is a significant and transformative experience, with the first pregnancy often being both joyful and anxiety-inducing. Anxiety related to childbirth can impact maternal well-being and pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to assess the level of childbirth-related anxiety among primigravida mothers. Methods: A quantitative research approach with a descriptive design was adopted. A total of 150 primigravida mothers were selected using a consecutive sampling technique. After obtaining informed consent, demographic data were collected, followed by an assessment of anxiety levels using the Pregnancy Specific Anxiety Tool (PSAT). Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The study findings indicate that majority of the participants were graduates (64%), homemakers (60.7%), and from joint families (68%). Most participants followed the Hindu religion (41.3%), and 56% had a monthly family income between ₹20,001 and ₹40,000. Anxiety assessment using the PSAT revealed that 52% of primigravida mothers had moderate level of anxiety, 41.3% had mild anxiety, and 6.7% experienced severe anxiety. Statistical analysis showed no significant association between anxiety scores and selected maternal variables (p > 0.05), except for employment status (p < 0.05). Employed mothers exhibited significantly higher anxiety levels compared to homemakers. Conclusion: The study highlights that a considerable proportion of primigravida mothers experience moderate levels of anxiety during pregnancy. Employment status plays a significant role in anxiety levels, with working mothers reporting higher anxiety. These findings emphasize the need for targeted psychological support and antenatal counselling to help expectant mothers cope with pregnancy-related anxiety.
