Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift to remote and hybrid work, creating an era of hyper-connectivity through constant use of video conferencing, collaboration tools, emails, and notifications. While these technologies enhanced flexibility and continuity, they have also intensified digital fatigue, including Zoom fatigue, tool overload, technostress, and burnout. This post-pandemic assessment, drawing primarily on 2023–2025 literature, examines how digital fatigue affects employee retention and turnover intentions. Empirical evidence indicates a strong positive correlation between remote working fatigue and turnover intentions, particularly among Millennials (Syakir et al., 2025). Statistical findings reveal that digital tool fatigue results in productivity losses averaging 51 minutes per employee per week, equivalent to nearly 44 hours annually (Robinson, 2025). Additionally, surveys show that nearly 75% of employees still experience Zoom fatigue at varying levels (Bailenson, 2025 update studies). Declining employee engagement, which fell to approximately 21–23% globally by 2024, further exacerbates retention challenges (Gallup, 2025). Organizational strategies such as tool rationalization, right-to-disconnect policies, and digital wellness initiatives are critical for mitigating fatigue and improving retention outcomes. This study highlights the urgent need for human-centric digital practices in sustaining workforce well-being in hyper-connected environments.
