Multidimensional Poverty in Rural Jammu and Kashmir: An Empirical Assessment of Ramban and Kupwara Districts

This study is an attempt to review the multidimensional poverty in selected rural areas of Ramban and Kupwara districts of Jammu and Kashmir. The study examines deprivation at the household level, employing the Alkire-Foster methodology that involves the incidence, intensity and structure of household deprivation. The results indicate significant spatial differences with Ahdwa and Chanderkoote having higher poverty rates and Ghusi having higher poverty intensity. Three key contributors to deprivation are: economic insecurity, lack of social security and bad living conditions. Employment, health insurance, cooking fuel, asset ownership, and sanitation are some of the deprivation indicators. The study underlines the importance of policy interventions that are designed for specific regions and have multiple dimensions in order to support inclusive and sustainable rural development.
